One step forward, two steps back

It’s okay to feel like you’ve taken one step forward and two steps back. That idiom really only depicts a feeling. You feeling that you’re not making any progress or stagnating. But hear me when I say, that is simply not true.

Let me first congratulate you for taking a step forward. How many people do you know that choose to stand still or step backward into safety? Whenever you take a step forward, you’re stepping forward into growth. Enjoy it.

In every perceived failure a seed of success is actually planted. I’ve mentioned it before, that when you stop and ask yourself, “what’s the worst thing that can happen?” you’ll soon realize that in your “two steps back,” the worst thing that has happened is that you learned a really good lesson. You’re able to re-frame your set back as vital stepping stone to future success.

So dust yourself off and keep stepping forward into growth. Your perception of taking two steps back is not your reality. The reality is that you’re sowing seeds of success that will in due season bear your best fruit.

Get Real

It’s not enough to get real.  We must get real and get going.

We often slowly torture ourselves when the desires of our heart and mind seem to meet opposition. We constantly think of that which we want but are afraid that if we courageously step into that space we will ruin everything. Your employees may quit, your spouse may resent you, you’ll let everyone down, you could (gulp) fail. The reality is, you weren’t created to simply exist in a space where everyone feels comfortable and everything stays the same. Progress comes with change.

You’re not taking one for the team when you settle. You’re actually letting the team down. The team needs you to step into that space and do what’s best for you and them. Even if it hurts in the beginning – which it might, and even if you’re scared – which you are. But the world needs you to show up and do what you know in your heart and in your mind needs to be done.

Get real. Get going. Shine on.

Closing the Gap

There’s always this distance between where we currently are (here) and where we want to be (there).

At the beginning of 2012 many of us set out to accomplish BIG things. New Year’s Resolutions, 30 before 30 lists, vision boards you name it! They were created. There was energy and excitement around what 2012 would mean to so many of us if in December, we accomplished what we set out to do back in January.  Some of us may have made great progress, while others fell off the wagon early in the first quarter. But here’s the great news! It’s the second half baby, and it’s anyone’s game. This year can still be yours for the taking so long as you recommit to your goals, stay focused, and get really clear on why you’re going after what it is that you want. You see closing the gap gets easier and easier the more honest we are with ourselves as to why we want what’s on the other side. What’s your motivation? Why do you want it? Once you’ve answered that question (why do you want it?)…it’s up to you to be hell bent on closing the gap.

Remember, there is always something you can do today, that will move you closer towards your end goal. You just have to take action.

Are You Celebrating the Small Wins?

ARE YOU CELEBRATING THE SMALL WINS?

Oftentimes we get too caught up in what our victory should look like that we forget to celebrate the small wins along the way.  While people often say it’s about the journey, it seems like… that while we are making incremental progress towards our big bold goals we find ourselves not unhappy, but not ecstatic either about the small victories we achieve along the way.

Here’s the deal. Success is simply the result of small wins that happen consistently over and extended period of time. So do yourself a favor, when you have a win…no matter how big or small. Think of it as a big one and celebrate!

This will help you enjoy the journey on the way towards achieving the impossible.
